5010 Enforcement Discretion Period Nears End

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Version 5010 enforcement discretion period is coming to an end, the DME MACs are warning.

All HIPAA-covered entities were originally supposed to be upgraded to Version 5010 of the electronic standards by Jan. 1. But based on industry feedback, CMS granted an enforcement discretion period until June 30, 2012, to give stakeholders more time to make the transition.

“If you have not yet finalized your Version 5010 upgrade, you should be working to complete this step as soon as possible,” the DME MACs said in news announcements last week.
