Supporting Power Wheelchair Drivers with Muscle Weakness

Alternative Driving Methods, Postural Support & Mounting

People who have muscle weakness resulting from diagnoses such as muscular dystrophy, spinal muscular atrophy, and ALS often require power wheelchairs for mobility. Muscle weakness reduces active range of motion and activation force, thus requiring alternative driving methods designed to meet these functional limitations. The driver will also require adequate postural support, not just for maintaining a seated posture, but also to facilitate use of the driving method.

This course will address the clinical implications of muscle weakness, appropriate alternative driving methods and features, as well as positioning and mounting considerations. Case studies will be included.

What You’ll Learn:

  • 3 functional implications of muscle weakness.
  • Features of at least 3 alternative driving methods commonly used with people who have muscle weakness.
  • Positioning options to support use of alternative driving methods.
