Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Releases Discrimination Stats

The United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) received 25,957 workplace discrimination charges related to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in 2013.

A news release from the EEOC said discrimination charges based on disability accounted for 27.7 percent of all charges filed for fiscal year Oct. 1, 2012-Sept. 30, 2013. “Both race and disability discrimination increased in percentage of all charges while decreasing in raw numbers from the previous year,” EEOC said.

The most common form of workplace discrimination cited in the charges was retaliation, at 41.4 percent.

While the number of ADA-related charges dropped by several hundred in 2013 compared to 2012, the number of ADA complaints has remained relatively steady since 2010, with totals between 25,165 and 26,379 in those years. By comparison, a decade ago the number of ADA workplace complaints filed was 15,377.
