VICE News recently filmed disability rights advocate Emily Ladau as she flew from New York to Portland. The video, called Flying Has Become Hell for Passengers with Wheelchairs, was supposed to document the indignities and difficulties routinely experienced by wheelchair riders.

Interior of passenger plane with view across a three-seat aisle. Seats are upholstered in dark blue.

“I never feel quite so much like a burden as I do when I’m getting on an airplane,” Ladau said in a voiceover, as she’s filmed being rolled backward onto the plane in an aisle chair.

Then, right on cue, Alaska Airlines broke Ladau’s Quantum Rehab power chair.

The 13-minute video also talks to All Wheels Up, an organization dedicated to making air travel more accessible for people with disabilities, and U.S. Department of Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg, who said giving passengers the ability to stay seated in their wheelchairs while flying is “clearly the direction we need to move in.”
