CMS Alerts Providers on Improper Seating Payments in 2023

The May 1 MLN Connects newsletter from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) included a notice that the improper payment rate for wheelchair seating in 2023 was 29.2%, “with a projected improper payment amount of $15.5 million.”

CMS is therefore asking seating providers to review its Medicare provider compliance tips. The agency reported that medical necessity issues accounted for 57.2% of improper payments. Insufficient documentation caused 24.4% of errors.

The tips include advice on preventing denials for general use, skin protection, positioning, and custom-fabricated seat cushions.

Answer: “A first-of-its-kind 3D-printed mobility device for toddlers!”

TOM Tikkun Olam Makers, LINK PBC (formerly LINK Product Development), and MakeGood INC collaborated on the project.
