Department of Labor Announces Theme for National Disability Employment Month’s 80th Anniversary
The U.S. Department of Labor has announced “Celebrating Value and Talent” as the theme of 2025’s National Disability Employment Month (NDEAM) campaign. NDEAM, observed in October, celebrates its 80th anniversary this year.
Leading up to the United States’ 250th birthday in 2026, “This year’s observance will highlight the achievements of Americans with disabilities both past and present,” the Department of Labor said in a June 26 press release.
“Celebrating America means celebrating the value and talent that all Americans — including people with disabilities — add to our nation’s workplaces and communities,” said Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-DeRemer. “As we approach the 80th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, the Department of Labor remains committed to ensuring all people have the opportunity to find meaningful work.”
In 1945, the United States first recognized a national week to highlight contributions of people with physical disabilities. The Minnesota Council on Disability noted that NDEAM — then known as “National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week” — was created to support World War II veterans who’d been injured and disabled. In 1962, the word “physically” was dropped so people with all types of disabilities could be included.
NDEAM’s annual poster to celebrate the month of October will be available this summer.
