Philanthropist Pledges $20 Million to Florida University for ALS Work
Nova Southeastern University (NSU) has received a $20 million bequest from a philanthropist whose late wife had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
In a Jan. 9 news announcement, NSU, based in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, said the gift came from David Husman, founder and chairman of Heartland Real Estate Partners. The announcement said the bequest was “to provide funding for ALS research through the establishment of NSU Health’s David and Cathy Husman Neuroscience Institute, its Cathy J. Husman ALS Center, and the David and Cathy Husman Endowed Chair for Neuroscience.”
Cathy Husman died of ALS in 2023. The latest gift brings the Husmans’ total bequest to the school to more than $41 million.
“What makes a gift of this size so transformational is its impact across all aspects of our mission to advance education, research and patient care,” said NSU President and CEO Dr. Harry K. Moon. “First and foremost, this funding will improve treatments, foster breakthroughs and elevate the quality of life for ALS patients and families. It also will help us attract and sustain talented health-care providers and innovators here in Florida, allowing us to better educate future caregivers in the ALS arena as we make our patient care facilities some of the world’s very best.”
