Convaid Donates Equipment to Hurricane Sandy Recovery Efforts

December 17, 2012 by Laurie Watanabe

Convaid has donated wheelchairs to residents in areas hard hit by Hurricane Sandy in late October.

Hayley Rodenfeld, a 17-year-old member of Girl Scouts troop 5227 of Staten Island, N.Y., contacted Convaid when a member of the troop lost her wheelchair in the storm. Troop 5227’s members range in age from 6 to 22 and include girls who are able bodied as well as those with disabilities.

In explaining her actions, Rodenfeld said in a Convaid news announcement, “As a Girl Scout, we always help people at all times and are a sister to every Girl Scout. I want to put a plan into place to assist all the children with special needs and their families from my Girl Scout Troop that were directly affected by Hurricane Sandy. Locating and delivering special needs equipment for the children is on the top of the list.”

Convaid is delivering the chairs this week to Home Medical Equipment in Garden City, N.Y.

Convaid President Chris Braun said, “We knew right away when we were contacted by Troop 5227 and the team from Home Medical Equipment that we were going to do what we can to help. Hurricane Sandy has had devastating effects to many people on the East Coast, and we are happy that we can contribute to rebuilding the community.”
