The Medicare DME MACs have issued a bulletin in response to what they say is “confusion on the part of DMEPOS suppliers regarding the proper billing of lithium batteries.”
The bulletin noted that many providers are confusing lithium batteries, which are disposable and non-rechargeable, with lithium ion batteries, which are rechargeable.
The bulletin also listed the correct codes for lithium batteries:
E2397: Power wheelchair accessory, lithium-based battery, each
A4235: Replacement battery, lithium, for use with home blood glucose monitors owned by beneficiaries
A4601: Lithium ion battery for non-prosthetic use, replacement
K0604: Replacement battery for external infusion pump owned by beneficiary, lithium, 3.6-volt, each
K0605: Replacement battery for external infusion pump owned by beneficiary, lithium, 4.5-volt, each
L7367: Lithium ion battery, replacement
