Invacare Corp. has launched the Alber e-motion DuoDrive, a power-assist system designed to provide greater flexibility and independence for manual wheelchair riders.
“This durable medical device is set to redefine the mobility experience for wheelchair users globally,” Invacare said in an April 22 announcement. “Featuring technologies like Cruise Mode and Brake Assist, the e-motion DuoDrive power assist offers exceptional freedom and convenience, helping to empower users to navigate their daily lives with ease.”
Once activated, DuoDrive’s Cruise Mode eliminates the need for wheelchair riders to push manually on the pushrim. Riders continue to steer via the pushrims, but do not need use them to propel, even when rolling up an incline. Cruise Mode can also maintain set speeds on inclines, while Brake Assist can control wheelchair speeds when going downhill.
Dual driving modes allow the wheelchair rider to change between DuoDrive and traditional pushrim drive, and a wireless control unit provides an easy, intuitive way to adjust speed and driving modes.
“Mobility should never hinder independence,” said Kirk Price, senior marketing manager at Invacare. “With the e-motion DuoDrive power assist, we’re delivering a solution that helps enhance the lives of wheelchair users, offering freedom and convenience. Whether navigating urban landscapes or enjoying outdoor adventures, our device empowers users to navigate their day with confidence.”
The DuoDrive system weighs 17.1 lbs. (7.8 kg) per wheel and is compatible with most standard manual wheelchairs. The e-motion wheels are available in 22-, 24-, and 25-inch sizes and support a maximum user weight of 330 lbs. (150 kg).
“Every aspect of the e-motion DuoDrive power assist is engineered to enhance the user experience,” Price said. “From its lightweight design to its intuitive controls, our goal is to empower users to live life on their terms and ‘Making Life’s Experiences Possible.’”
