Kalogon has launched a 3D-printed custom back support designed to complement the company’s Orbiter Med wheelchair seat cushion.
The Bondar back is “designed for people who need additional postural correction or support from their wheelchairs,” Kalogon said in a June 17 press release. The company used clinical feedback to design the new back support, which was made to be “user friendly for installation and adjustments. The mounting system is easy to lock in place and remove, with fewer screws and steps to fit than most backrests on the market today. The powerful combination of Bondar and Orbiter Med offers customers a fully coded system that supports overall seated health, including better respiratory function, digestion and mental well-being.”
“Many seating assessments begin with facilitating posture, which is determined by the position of the pelvis and spine,” said Tim Balz, CEO and co-founder of the Melbourne, Florida-based company. “A seat cushion and back support must work harmoniously to deliver effective postural support and increase duration of sitting time. That’s why we developed a custom back support designed to complement our Orbiter Med seat cushions. Together, they form a complete seating system that offers a holistic approach to seating tolerance, support and quality of life.”
Bondar by the numbers
The new back support is HCPCS coded E2617. Bondar is available in widths from 12 inches (30.48 cm) to 25 inches (63.5 cm), with lengths of 12 inches to 25 inches (30.48 to 63.5 cm). The back’s depth is up to 8 inches (20.32 cm). It weighs approximately 2.67 lbs. (1.21 kg) with quick-release hardware to facilitate transport and storage.
The back’s shell, Kalogon noted, “flexes rather than cracks under pressure.”
Standard Bondar backs have a weight capacity of 250 lbs. (113.4 kg). It can adapt to different setups via a power chair adapter plate and headrest mounting plate.
The back’s shell is a 3D-printed polycarbonate blend that can be wiped clean, with a cross-linked polyethylene foam top layer. The back’s cover is made of four-way stretch fabric that can be washed in cold water and air dried.
Kalogon said the Bondar typically ships in seven to 21 business days. “If delivery extends beyond 21 days, clinicians will be notified at time of order,” the company said.
Seating professionals can use Kalogon’s interactive, real-time configurator during the ordering process.
“As they input precise measurements, a 360-degree image of the custom order updates in real time, allowing specialists to visualize the final product,” the announcement said. “This interactive ordering process helps eliminate guesswork and reduces costly remakes, which are common when back supports arrive significantly different from what was expected during the ordering process.”
