MaRS (Medical and Related Sciences), which describes itself as North America’s largest urban innovation hub, is partnering with the Toyota Mobility Foundation to launch an open call for startups to join the second cohort of the Mobility Unlimited Hub in Toronto.
“Ten applicants will be selected to participate in the hub, which has become a global destination for active mobility technologies,” MaRS said in its announcement. “We’re seeking global solution providers that enable people to move and communicate through the world — physically, digitally, emotionally or socially — with greater ease, independence and dignity.”
Submissions are now open through June 12.
Eligible active mobility technologies include AI or robotics that support physical or cognitive independence; smart wearables that support improved balance, energy use, gait or motion; voice, gesture or alternative-input systems for hands-free control; transportation tech, including rideshare and adaptive devices; systems for inclusive gaming, sports or recreation; and sensors and systems that make homes, vehicles or cities more intuitive.
Cohort members receive up to $100,000 in funding for the two-year period, advisory support, commercialization workshops, and public relations support, among other benefits.
To be eligible, entrants must be the main technology innovator leading or co-leading a Canadian business, and part of a business venture registered as a Canadian corporation by July 18, 2025. Technology must be proprietary and/or patentable, and must directly impact people with disabilities.
Allex Laurin, director of marketing for Cheelcare — manufacturer of the Companion power-assist system and the Curio power wheelchair — said of the MaRS cohort incubator program, “The program helps early- and growth-stage companies commercialize their mobility related products with the support of funding, insights, and collaboration. Cheelcare was selected as part of their first cohort last year and found this program really helpful for our growth.”
