The QUICKIE QS5 X Manual Folding Chair by Sunrise Medical has been named a 2025 Mobility Management Product Award winner in the  Wheelchairs, Manual: Ultralightweight category by Mobility Management.

The Mobility Management Product Awards program honors outstanding product development in Complex Rehab Technology (CRT) and accessibility. MM: Tell us about the QUICKIE QS5 X Manual Folding Chair, its top features and benefits.

Ibarra: The QUICKIE QS5 X is all about making life on-the-go easier. As one of the lightest aluminum folding wheelchairs on the market — just 16 lbs. for the fixed-front and 16.5 lbs. for the swing-away — it’s designed for effortless lifting, transport, and everyday use. Its smart FreeFold system cuts the effort to fold by more than 40%, and the optional Fold-n-Lock keeps the chair securely closed and standing upright for easy handling. Built with 7000 series aluminum for strength and responsiveness, the QS5 X rolls smoothly and efficiently, helping riders go farther with less effort.

MM: In designing this product, what were the top priorities of your design team and engineers?

Ibarra: Our goal was to redefine what a folding wheelchair could be — lighter, stronger, and easier to use. The team focused on creating a design that reduces daily effort without sacrificing performance or stability. By combining the right materials and the user-focused features, we achieved a chair that’s remarkably lightweight, easy to handle, and delivers a smooth, responsive ride.

MM: Who and/or what were the inspirations for your winning product’s functionality, features and design elements?

Ibarra: The chair was inspired by riders who wanted the freedom of an ultralight chair with the practicality of a folding frame. Our design team listened closely to clinicians and active users who needed a chair that travels easily, but still performs at a high level. Every feature was shaped by that feedback and a drive to make daily mobility simpler, smarter and more personal.

MM: Who benefits from your product? Can you offer a “typical” client profile?

Ibarra: The QS5 X benefits individuals who need a lightweight, high-performance folding wheelchair. It’s ideal for active users with conditions such as spinal cord injury, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis or other mobility impairments who value both independence and efficiency.

MM: Does your winning product offer adjustability or customizability for the different needs of different clients?

Ibarra: The wheelchair was designed with maximum adjustability and personalization in mind. It offers multiple frame angles, two frame versions (fixed-front and swing-away), and a wide range of seat dimensions (width/depth), center of gravity settings, etc. Clinicians and riders can also choose from a modern color collection and use the online 3D Visualizer to explore configurations and review options, ensuring every QS5 X is tailored to the individual.

MM: How does your winning product optimize independence, function, safety, confidence, success with everyday goals, etc., for its consumers?

Ibarra: This wheelchair was built to make mobility effortless and empowering. Its ultralight frame and intuitive folding system reduce the effort needed for daily tasks, like lifting and transport, helping users stay active and independent. The chair’s rigid geometry and high-strength materials enhance control and stability, while its tailored fit and modern styling boost confidence and comfort in everyday life.

MM: What funding options are available for this product?

Ibarra: The QS5 X is HCPCS coded K0005 and E1236 for sizes 14” or less.

MM: What makes a product or service a Mobility Management Product Award winner? What advice do you have for future entrants?

Ibarra: A Mobility Management Product Award winner stands out by solving real user challenges through meaningful innovation. It’s not just about new technology — it’s about improving people’s life for riders, clinicians, and caregivers in ways that truly matter. For future entrants, our advice is to listen closely to your users and let their needs guide every design decision.
