A new Wintergreen Research report estimates the global power wheelchair market will be worth $2.4 billion by the year 2022.
That would be significant growth for an industry segment that those researchers said was worth $1.5 billion in 2015.
Longer life expectancies were a major factor in that $2.4 billion estimate, as was the desire for aging populations to maintain their mobility to improve their quality of life.
The report included all types of power chairs, from “transport” models to wheelchairs commonly referred to as consumer power or complex rehab models in the durable medical equipment and complex rehab technology market segments.
The study also included power chair configurations of different types: center-, front- and rear-wheel-drive designs.
The report acknowledged, “Reimbursement pressures persist in the U.S. market.”
