NPE Contractors to Take Over Medicare DMEPOS Appeals, Rebuttals
The transition applies to appeals and rebuttals filed on May 8 or later.

May 6, 2026 by Laurie Watanabe

National Provider Enrollment (NPE) DMEPOS contractors will take over the handling of Medicare appeals and rebuttals for durable medical equipment, prosthetics, orthotics and supplies (DMEPOS) claims.

Starting May 8, Chags Health Information Technology (C-HIT) will no longer be handling those submissions. From May 8 and onward, suppliers “must be sent to the appropriate NPE based on the supplier’s enrollment jurisdiction,” Palmetto GBA, the NPWest contractor said.

The American Association for Homecare (AAHomecare) sent a bulletin with that update to members and stakeholders on May 5.

Two contractors will handle appeals and rebuttals nationwide

Novitas Solutions, the NPEast contractor, will work with suppliers in Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin, plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Palmetto GBA will handle appeals and rebuttals for Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming, plus American Samoa, Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

“Jurisdiction is determined based on the supplier’s enrollment record,” Palmetto noted. “Suppliers should ensure their enrollment information is current.”

Appeal rebuttal processes and requirements; submission standards, documentation and timelines; and CMS oversight and policy guidance won’t be changing. C-HIT will process appeals and rebuttals submitted before May 8.
