Power Wheelchair Soccer World Cup to Be Contested in Florida

May 8, 2017 by Laurie Watanabe

For the first time, the world championship for power wheelchair soccer will be played in the United States.

The Powerchair Football World Cup is scheduled to take place in Kissimmee, Fla., July 5-9.

The United States national team won the first two World Cups, which were played in Tokyo in 2006 and in Paris in 2011.

In a news announcement, Dominic Russo, president of the United States Power Soccer Association (USPSA), said, “We want to make this third World Cup reflect powerfully on the USA as the host country.”

Ten international teams will compete for the world title. Matches will take place at Silver Spurs Arena in Osceola Heritage Park. The first game will feature teams from the United States and Denmark.

USPSA estimates that hosting the event and supporting the American national team will cost about $700,000, and is seeking donations. The organization suggests donations in the amount of $20.17 to commemorate the upcoming World Cup.
