Run, Walk n’ Wheelathon Coming to Toronto Racetrack

June 30, 2011 by Laurie Watanabe

Motorsports fans will have the opportunity on July 7 to traverse the Honda Indy Toronto race course — the same course driven by IndyCar racers — while raising money for the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation and Shoot for a Cure Moto Sports.

The Run, Walk n’ Wheelathon event invites participants to walk, run or roll in their wheelchairs prior to the weekend’s Honda Indy Toronto race. The event offers a range of ways to participate, including a 5K competitive run and a 2.2K non-competitive walk/run/wheelchair option. Corporate Challenge teams will race in a 400-meter wheelchair relay.

The organizations benefiting from the fund raising are Shoot for a Cure Moto Sports (Shootforacure.org), which campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of safe driving to reduce the number of spinal cord injuries caused by automotive crashes, and the Sam Schmidt Paralysis Foundation, which funds research, medical treatment, rehabilitation and technological advances with the goal of finding a cure for paralysis.

Sam Schmidt sustained a spinal cord injury during an Indy Racing League practice session in January 2000. A little more than a year later, he founded Sam Schmidt Motorsports. As an IndyCar team owner, Schmidt travels extensively in support of his race team and his foundation (samschmidt.org).
