Sunrise Medical Launches Empulse M90 In-Wheel Power Assist
The new in-hub system doesn’t add width to the wheelchair.

August 20, 2025 by Laurie Watanabe

Sunrise Medical has introduced the Empulse M90, a power-assist system with an integrated, wheel add-on design.

“With its integrated design and lightweight build, the M90 delivers discreet power assist without the bulk, wires or external components typically seen on similar devices,” Sunrise Medical said in an Aug. 18 news announcement. “The M90 blends fashion and function with sleek lines and no visible wires or add-ons. Its fully integrated design keeps the wheelchair compact while improving balance and ride quality thanks to hub-centered weight. Even the removable batteries are discreetly housed for a cleaner look.”

While the Empulse M90 looks like a typical in-hub power-assist setup, a video on the Sunrise Medical website demonstrated that the new system does not add width to the wheelchair. The M90 can stay on the chair while the charger portion of the unit can be removed to charge off chair.

“The M90 offers two drive modes to match your preferred way of moving: All-Way Toggle for power wheelchair-style control, and Speed Controller with Handrim Steering for a cruise control-like experience using your handrims,” the announcement said. “The wireless dual controller can be mounted wherever it’s most convenient and detaches easily for transfers. Riders can continue using their preferred tires and handrims, ensuring a familiar and personalized ride.”

The M90 weighs just 27 lbs. (12.2 kg) as a complete set; each wheel, including the battery, weighs 12.9 (5.9 kg) for easy handling and transport. Driving is intuitive because power and weight are centralized on the wheels, Sunrise Medical added. “Built-in cruise control and intelligent hill control help ensure a safe, smooth experience. Riders can switch from power assist to free-roll instantly for complete flexibility.”
