Sunrise Medical Launches Nitrum Ultralightweight Wheelchair

December 9, 2020 by Laurie Watanabe

Sunrise Medical has launched the QUICKIE Nitrum ultralightweight manual wheelchair in the United States.

The rigid-framed Nitrum is described by Sunrise Medical as “unrivaled in terms of light weight, rigidity, adjustability and functional options. Lightest in its class, Nitrum is precision-engineered to efficiently convert energy into motion, allowing the user to propel with the least amount of effort.”

Thanks to patented, ovalized frame tubing using aerospace-grade 7020 aluminum, a Nitrum chair configured for everyday use starts at just 18.3 lbs. In a Dec. 8 news announcement, Sunrise noted, “Specially heat treated using Sunrise’s signature ShapeLoc technology, [Nitrum’s] hand-welded components, innovative backrest and other feature designs are all dedicated to minimizing the weight while enhancing the stiffness and performance.

“Instead of multiple parts welded, the newly patented caster link is one hollow forged component. Stronger, lighter and completely adjustable, the caster link can be personally tailored for the precise and very best handling, turning and propulsion efficiency.”

Nitrum features integrated LED lights with removable batteries for easy charging. A newly patented Twist-to-Lock bar enables a Nitrum owner to fold, lift and load the chair into a car using just one hand. The block-and-tackle seat upholstery, Sunrise added, requires minimal effort for tensioning and adjustment, while a redesigned, compact wheel lock is more durable and transfer friendly.

A 3D online visualizer and Augmented Reality feature on Sunrise Medical’s Web site allows Web site visitors to configure their own Nitrum by choosing optimal seat sling, backrest, sideguard, armrest, footrest, caster, rear wheel, wheel lock, frame accessory, and color options and settings. The Augmented Reality system shows how personally configured Nitrum wheelchairs fit into consumers’ homes.

“The valuable feedback from our customers has significantly influenced and advanced our development of Nitrum,” said Sunrise Medical’s group CEO Thomas Babacan. “We make sure that we consider all the finest details in our designs and innovations, and we are confident that you will feel the differences and benefits.”

Launched in other Sunrise Medical markets earlier this year, Nitrum is already an award winner, taking Retailers’ Choice of the Year honors from THIIS magazine, a trade publication in the United Kingdom.
