Are We Satisfied with Seating Technology Outcomes or Should We Strive for More?

Wheelchair seating technology significantly contributes to the wheelchair user’s functional independence, quality of life and overall well-being. A client-centered approach informed by findings from a seating assessment helps to determine which seating components are indicated and how they need to be adjusted to meet the client’s unique needs.

This session will provide a critical analysis of the design of current seating technology: back supports, tilt and recline systems, custom seating and seat cushion design. Why are these seating technologies designed, how do they impact the wheelchair user, and what are the expected outcomes and limitations?

A discussion around whether or not current state-of-the-art of seating component design is meeting clients’ functional needs will conclude the session.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the purpose of the designs of back supports, tilt and recline wheelchairs, custom seating, and seat cushions.
  • Identify at least two limitations of current back supports, tilt and recline systems, custom seating and seat cushion designs.
  • Generate a discussion and share knowledge and ideas to improve current wheelchair seating designs.
