Current technologies for managing wheelchair clients’ postures include tilt in space, back support recline systems, and aftermarket back supports. These technologies have benefited clients for many years, but seating remains challenging for a large population. In addition, we know that seating postures change during the day depending on tone, postural energy, tasks, and preferences — however, it is hard to provide postural variations using current technologies.
This presentation will investigate biomechanics to understand why so many clients still have unresolved seating challenges. We will propose a new concept designed to facilitate spine extension and head position while addressing postural fatigue, postural variation, and tone changes.
What You’ll Learn:
- The biomechanics behind the limitations of tilt in space, back support recline systems, and aftermarket back supports.
- The biomechanics behind spine extension, head positioning, and postural variations.
- The benefits of managing postural variation and tone changes with a novel seating system called EPiC seating.
