Carbon Black System Is Looking for Investors

July 16, 2018 by Laurie Watanabe

Carbon Black System, manufacturer of self-propelled wheelchairs made largely of carbon fiber, is looking for investors.

The manufacturer is using Crowdcube, a crowdfunding sources, to expand its distribution footprint.

In its Crowdcube posting, Carbon Black says, “We are on a mission to change the lives of wheelchair users. We use strong and lightweight carbon fiber to create beautiful chairs that show off the person, not the disability. Your investment will help us to launch our 2nd generation chair into markets both here and abroad.”

The company is looking to raise £340,000, which is approximately $450,000 American. As of July 16 at press time, Carbon Black had raised £190,400 which equates to about $252,000 American.

Carbon Black System is based in Scotland. It describes its wheelchair as “innovative and futuristic,” and made “almost entirely” of carbon fiber. The Carbon Black II wheelchair, for which the company is taking pre-orders, has a weight as low as 5.5kg, which is a little over 12 lbs.

The carbon fiber used in Carbon Black chairs is produced in China, but the company says “design and assembly staunchly remain in the UK.” Options include LED lights, push handles, anti-tippers, seat pouches, clothes guards, and Tarta backrests.

The manufacturer is planning to next expand its distribution to the United States and Germany.
