Incredibly, summer 2026 is nearing its end, and kids are heading back to school.
Time to check out back-to-school recommendations for parents of wheelchair riders, posted by two national providers.
Rehab Medical’s suggestions include giving power wheelchair riders an extra charger; mapping out accessible entrances, hallways, elevators, restrooms and parking/drop-off locations ahead of time; and asking about clubs or groups with accessible activities.
The article provides recommendations for grade-school students, and a second dedicated list for college students, with higher-education institutions typically following guidelines from the Americans with Disabilities Act.
National Seating & Mobility’s (NSM) back-to-school recommendations included keeping bedtimes and wake-up times consistent all year long, practicing with new equipment ahead of time, and taking mobility equipment in for tune-ups before school starts.
The NSM article also featured tips from Cristina, mom to Matthew, a preschooler when the tips were published the summer of 2024. “I always tell the teachers or aides that if anything breaks or they’re struggling to unbuckle a belt to take him out, it’s best to call me,” Cristina said.
