VICE News recently filmed disability rights advocate Emily Ladau as she flew from New York to Portland. The video, called Flying Has Become Hell for Passengers with Wheelchairs, was supposed to document the indignities and difficulties routinely experienced by wheelchair riders.

“I never feel quite so much like a burden as I do when I’m getting on an airplane,” Ladau said in a voiceover, as she’s filmed being rolled backward onto the plane in an aisle chair.

Then, right on cue, Alaska Airlines broke Ladau’s Quantum Rehab power chair.

The 13-minute video also talks to All Wheels Up, an organization dedicated to making air travel more accessible for people with disabilities, and U.S. Department of Transportation Sec. Pete Buttigieg, who said giving passengers the ability to stay seated in their wheelchairs while flying is “clearly the direction we need to move in.”

On Jan. 11, Xavier Becerra, the Secretary of Health & Human Services, announced an extension of the Public Health Emergency (PHE) that’s been in place since Jan. 27, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This latest extension remains in effect till April 10, 2023.

Earlier this week, President Joe Biden announced that the COVID-19 national and public health emergencies will end May 11.
