RESNA & CTF Seek Comments on Standing Position Paper

February 7, 2023 by Laurie Watanabe

A draft of a RESNA and the Clinician Task Force (CTF) position paper — “RESNA and CTF Position on the Application of Supported Standing Devices: Current State of the Literature“ — is nearing the end of its 30-day public comment period.

The draft was written to update the RESNA Application of Wheelchair Standing Devices. The draft’s authors are Cara E. Masselink, Ph.D., OTR/L, ATP, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo, Mich.; Ashley Detterbeck, DPT, ATP/SMS, Permobil; Nicole B. LaBerge, PT, ATP, Permobil; and Ginny Paleg, PT, MPT, DScPT, Montgomery County Infants and Toddlers, Rockville, Md.

In its Jan. 13 posting of the draft, RESNA said, “This paper describes the results of a rigorous scoping review, analyzing results through an International Classification of Function lens, with the goal of producing a position paper explaining the impact of supported standing in a variety of devices.”

The RESNA announcement added that the public review period was shortened to 30 days “due to an urgent advocacy opportunity.” The Complex Rehab Technology industry is awaiting a consideration announcement from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ on coverage of power standing on power wheelchairs funded by Medicare.
